Samples were taken from socks that the study participants had worn from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. one day. The laboratory test showed that bacteria of the variety “Pseudomonas aeruginosa” were present on half of the socks. These can be found, for example, on the floor, doormats or in cockroach droppings.

These bacteria can cause skin rashes, urinary tract and respiratory diseases and even pneumonia in immunocompromised people.

The results were also compared to swabs from a TV remote control. The result: The test subjects’ socks were significantly dirtier than a TV remote control – which, according to numerous studies, generally contains more bacteria than a normal toilet.

This way you can still wear socks

However, wearing socks to bed also has numerous advantages. Among other things, it reduces hot flashes and night sweats, promotes falling asleep more quickly and extends sleep duration and can even promote eroticism in bed.

However, you should wear fresh socks for this. For example, socks made from natural fibers such as cotton are suitable for this. This releases excess heat well to the outside, does not have an insulating effect and is permeable to air.
