With its sweet and sour taste, apple sauce is a tasty all-rounder. Whether as a side dish to savory dishes such as potato pancakes, as a topping for sweet treats or simply on its own – it can be used everywhere.
Anyone who shops carefully has probably already discovered apple puree on the supermarket shelves alongside the well-known puree.
At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be much difference between the two products. Both apple puree and apple sauce are made from pureed apples.
The sugar content
However, upon closer inspection, one crucial difference can be seen: the sugar content.
In Germany, the sugar content in apple sauce, as prescribed in the guidelines for fruit products, is at least 16.5 percent.
Since an apple naturally contains around 11 percent fructose, manufacturers have to add a lot of sugar in order to be able to declare their product as applesauce.
However, this directive can easily be circumvented by using the product apple puree instead of applesauce – there is no minimum sugar content for this.
If you want to watch your own sugar consumption, you should rather mark It tastes delicious even without artificial sweetener.
