Even if we are not very thirsty, we need to drink enough every day. “Water is the basis of all vital processes in the body,” says Ingo Froböse from the German Sport University in Cologne.
But how much exactly is enough? According to sports scientist Froböse, the range is large: it should be between one and six liters per day. This depends on age, gender, weight and fat percentage, but also on the temperature that surrounds us.
An example: 20 years old, moderately active and weighing 70 kilos – if it’s a man, he needs around 3.2 liters per day, a woman only 2.7 liters.
Athletes need to drink more
Anyone who does a lot of exercise should generally drink one liter more every day, even on days without exercise. In addition, the more you sweat, the more water you need.
However, drinking regularly is better than drinking a lot at once. According to Froböse, the body can absorb a maximum of one liter of water per hour, the rest goes unused, so to speak.
Use regular reminder hacks
These little tricks will help you avoid forgetting to drink regularly:
- Always have a water bottle with you to remind you to drink.
- When you work, keep a glass on your desk and refill it frequently.
- A tip especially for the cold season: A delicious, unsweetened tea offers a change from water and also warms you up.
