Almost all bottles and many packages have it, but very few people know what it means: the small “e” behind the liter indication on the label.

The “e” is the so-called EEC symbol. This stands for compliance with the EU Prepackaging Regulation.
This regulation stipulates, among other things, that the fill level of packaging, bottles and finished products must be approximately the same. While the regulation is mandatory, labelling is voluntary.
Reading tip
The small “e” is permitted for all packaging with nominal filling quantities from 5 grams to 10 kilograms.
What you need to know about the small “e”
- Small deviations are fine, but the average value must be correct.
- Signs that look like the sign and could be confused are not allowed.
- The exact position and size are also specified in the Prepackaging Regulation. The minimum height of the EEC symbol must be three millimetres.
- However, it is not specified whether the small “e” must appear after each filling quantity indication.
