Whether made from soy, coconut, almond or peas: there are now plenty of plant-based milk alternatives. The most popular variant, however, is probably the oat drink.
This is no longer a niche product and can be found not only in organic markets, but in every supermarket, discounter and drugstore.

Oat milk is not only popular with vegans. More and more people who consume animal products are also enjoying the sweet drink.
For many people, oat milk is a must, especially with their morning coffee. However, according to an expert, it is not a good idea to drink the trendy drink first thing in the morning.
Oat milk before breakfast: Not a good idea, according to experts
The posts of the French biochemist and best-selling author Jessie Inchauspé – known on social media as @glucosegoddess – continue to go viral on Instagram & Co. The nutrition expert regularly explains blood sugar traps on her channels. In one article, for example, she clearly shows how a matcha latte with oat milk affects the body compared to the same drink with cow’s milk. The graphic shows that the oat variant leads to significantly higher blood sugar levels.
But why is that? She writes: “Did you know that oat milk is one of the milks with more carbohydrates? So it can lead to blood sugar spikes. To avoid such spikes, choose a milk with fat and/or protein, such as whole milk or, if you’re looking for a plant-based alternative, unsweetened almond or soy milk.”

In a video interview she goes into more detail about the background and explains: “Oat milk is made from oats. Oats are a grain. And grain is starch. When You Drink Oat Milk, You’re Drinking ‘Grain Juice’ […]and that leads to high blood sugar levels.” In contrast, cow’s milk is primarily made up of protein and fat, while unsweetened nut milk also has a low starch content. These types of milk are therefore a better choice than carbohydrate-rich oat milk – at least when it comes to keeping blood sugar levels stable.
It is particularly bad to drink oat milk immediately after getting up on an empty stomach. If you can’t do without the herbal drink, you should drink it after breakfast or combine it with a walk afterwards. In this way, so-called “glucose peaks”, i.e. blood sugar peaks, can be avoided.

A stable blood sugar level is important for the body
When blood sugar levels feel like a roller coaster ride with ups and downs, it can have negative effects on the body. For example, if the day starts with a carbohydrate-rich oat milk coffee or a sweet jam bread, this can lead to cravings, fatigue and impure skin. It is therefore important to consume carbohydrates consciously and to distinguish between “good” and “bad” carbohydrates.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that oat milk should be completely banned from the diet. Ultimately, it also depends on the dose, and every person reacts slightly differently to food when it comes to blood sugar levels. But at least that morning cappuccino or matcha latte could be replaced every now and then with an alternative if drunk on an empty stomach. How about, for example cashew or Almond milk?
