Is Paska bread or cake? The fluffy, sweet milk bread is baked in Poland, Ukraine and other Eastern European countries for Easter – or for Christmas.
Traditional is eaten after Lent and can also be referred to as a cake.
We present you a simple recipe where you can’t do anything wrong – and get a delicious change from the classic yeast braid.
Ingredients for Paska bread
- 3 eggs
- A cube of fresh yeast or approx. 40 g of yeast powder
- ½ liter milk
- 1 kg flour
- 100 ml oil
- 1 pack of vanilla sugar
- 1 pack of powdered sugar
- 200 g of sugar
Depending on the taste, you can put raisins, dried apricots or other dried fruits and nuts in the dough.
For the creative and colorful decoration, you need crumbs, chocolate or a similar ornament.
Paska Brot: Preparation
- Mix the eggs with the sugar and vanilla sugar in a bowl, beat foamy. Then stir the yeast into the mixture.
- Boil the milk in a saucepan and let it rest briefly until it is lukewarm.
- Put the warm milk into the bowl to the eggs.
- Add the flour gradually and knead the dough – process with a mixer if necessary. If you want to use raisins, you can now mix them in.
Now add some oil and knead the dough again until the surface gets an oily layer. - Cover the bowl with a transparent film or a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rest for an hour.

For the following step, it is important to know whether you want a big bread or prefer several little ones. The right baking tins are necessary accordingly.
- For a big bread: grease the baking pan, model the dough like a ball and place it in the mold. Tip: wet the fingertips with a little oil so that you can easily remove the dough out of the bowl.
- Cover the dough again and let it rest for at least two hours.
After the dough has risen, it is now baked at 160 degrees at top and bottom heat for an hour. - When the bread is finished, you let it cool, afterwards you can glazed it.
- For the glaze, you need powdered sugar and some hot water: mix with a whisk and then spread generously on the bread with a brush. Create drops that run down on the sides.
If you like it more creative, you can let off steam during the decoration. Use colorful crumbs or gummy bears for an example. After the glaze is dry, you can enjoy the bread with your family and friends.

If you want to braid the Paska bread like a yeast braid, note the following steps.
- Separate the dough into two halves of the same size and put one part in the baking pan.
- Cut the other huts into six strips of the same size.
- Put the pieces side by side and braid a braid. After the braid is broken, carefully put it in the baking pan on the first half.
