Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by excessive mechanical tension on the hair.
This is the case, for example, with high, tight braids. In the long term, the hair roots can become so damaged that not only do hair fall out, but they also no longer grow back.
Do I have traction alopecia?
If you regularly wear tight, tight hairstyles, the following signs could indicate traction alopecia:
- Increased hair loss or hair breakage in heavily stressed areas, particularly at the roots
- Over time: Receding of the hairline
Like the Tiktoker haircareking shows in his video, traction alopecia can manifest itself in the long term, for example as in the case of the dancer Jojo Siwa.

Give your hair time to rest by leaving it open or tying it loosely. If your hair, for example if it is particularly long and thick, puts strain on the hair roots despite loose styling, you should consider having it cut shorter or thinned out.
You can also strengthen your hair roots by consuming enough important nutrients such as biotin, magnesium and zinc. Also Shampoos with caffeine or vitamin B can help with hair loss.
