Why do you get headaches after sport?

Those where the pain in the head only occurs for a few minutes are happy. But it can also happen that the headache lasts up to 48 hours after sport.

The International Headache Society (short: IHS) has a suitable name for the athlete problem, which usually affects endurance athletes: effort headache.

What is effort headache?

The name is the program and also explains the main reason for the strange suffering in the skull: you took over during sports!

Either the physical strain was so unusual that the organism reacts outraged with this aching warning signal. Or you are just jogging, cycling, hiking or something similar today.

The explanation is fairly simple: Due to the sporting stress and overload, the vessels in the skull base are exposed to higher pressure.

The effort for the vessels is increased by sweating and the loss of liquid, minerals such as magnesium and, above all, the resulting lack of salt.

Other reasons for headache after sport

  1. Training in an unusual height – something like this happens quickly, for example if you drive the car briefly into the mountains, i.e. quickly overcome altitude meters and from there, without adapting, wandering or skiing, the head can groan in the evening.
  2. Unusual temperatures, for example in the event of a sudden change in weather and strong heat or sultry.
  3. A high loss of fluid is often associated with high outside temperatures. When sweating, athletes lose valuable minerals and salts, which can lead to dehydration.
  4. A magnesium deficiency can also be responsible.
  5. Too high lactate value and thus acidification of the muscles can also lead to headache after sport.
  6. Unclean technology or a false running style can lead to muscular tension or dysbalances. They are the cause of the tension headache, which then potentiates with the overexertion.

Who is affected?

A lot of people have a headache, but the effort in statistics does not appear too often.

According to the “International Headache Society”, it is one percent of all cases of headache. From the spectrum of sports, it mainly affects endurance athletes, hikers and mountaineers and competition athletes.

Acute treatment for exertion headache

First of all, it hits to give your body enough calm. Drink a lot, either lukewarm tea or even better vegetable broth that can compensate for mineral loss. Chewing ginger slices and consumption of carbohydrates can also alleviate the exertion headache.

If you suffer from sport after sport, you should definitely have it clarified at the doctor. Also be careful when dealing with painkillers: false and excessive use can lead to headaches.

So you prevent headaches through sport

If you don’t want to hang in the ropes after sports, you can prevent it before sporting activity. Means: drinking a lot and the amount of fluids over smaller portions more often.

If you stay in the aerobic area (this prevents acidification), this can also prevent the unpleasant attacks. Also try to raise the blood sugar level in front of the movement unit by eating fruit (for example a banana).
