Not every class offered in the gym burns calories equally effectively. But which five workouts are the biggest calorie killers?

1. High Intensity Training (HIIT)

You can burn up to 900 calories per hour with high intensity training (HIIT). This was the conclusion reached by the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a study.

A HIIT workout with squats, lunges, burpees and short recovery periods between sets burned about 15 calories per minute, according to the researchers.

2. Exercising with boxing

You can lose up to 800 calories in one training session at a boxing class. According to studies by the British Heart Foundation and the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, this applies at least to a person weighing 70 kilos, reports ‘The Economist’ in an analysis different sports.

For comparison: For one boxing session you can eat a large plate of spaghetti carbonara or a cheeseburger with fries.

3. Full Body Workout: Crossfit

According to researchers at Kennesaw State University, a CrossFit session burns up to 13 calories per minute – without any additional weights.

Pull-ups, push-ups and squats are the exercises that are particularly effective.

4. Spinning

This classic fitness course comes in fourth place in the ranking. Just three quarters of an hour of spinning (medium intensity) will burn around 550 calories for a 75 kilo person who is trained on average.

The extremely sweaty workout is therefore ideal for losing weight.

Running is not one of the usual course sports, but in many cities there are now running meetings where athletes meet regularly to jog together.

You don’t just maintain social contacts or get to know new people: If you cover eight kilometers in an hour, you burn around 600 calories.

At faster speeds the number continues to increase.
