Winter is tangerine time! The vitamin C bombs strengthen the immune system – this is extremely important, especially in winter, when colds are particularly common.
But anyone who stores tangerines at home knows the problem: after just a few days, the citrus fruits are dry and taste rather bland.
Why tangerines dry out quickly
This is mainly related to the heating air. Because when it gets cold outside, you turn up the heat – then the citrus fruits lose their sweet taste. According to the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center, tangerines can lose their flesh after just one week.
With proper storage, tangerines stay fresher for longer
However, to ensure that the citrus fruits last longer, you can use a simple trick – and it mainly has something to do with storage. These should be stored in a cool and dry place, as Ökotest recommends. So definitely not in rooms where there is proper heating in winter. The perfect temperature is therefore between one and five degrees Celsius. However, the temperatures should not be below this, because then the citrus fruits also lose their taste.

- However, these should not be stored in the refrigerator – the basement is best suited for this or a storage room if it is reasonably cool.
- The citrus fruits should also be stored next to each other instead of on top of each other.
- Tangerines should generally always be checked for mold formation. If the tangerines are too close together or are stored on top of each other, pressure points and therefore mold quickly develop.
- It also makes sense not to store citrus fruits next to other fruits.
Clementines have a longer shelf life than tangerines
If the tangerines are stored correctly, they last significantly longer and do not become dry. Incidentally, clementines have a longer shelf life than tangerines. “These last significantly longer,” writes Ökotest. The thicker the peel, the longer the citrus fruits stay fresh.
