The dishwasher is probably the most popular appliance in the kitchen. But if you don’t take good care of it, you’ll damage the device in the long run. You can get your dishwasher clean again with three simple home remedies.
1. Vinegar
Vinegar is a popular home remedy when it comes to cleaning household items. Vinegar essence can not only eliminate limescale, but also bacteria.
- To do this, simply take a bucket of water and add two cups of vinegar essence.
- Then use the liquid to thoroughly wipe the interior of the machine. Be careful not to touch rubber seals with the vinegar.
- You can also ideally soak the dishwashing arms or sieve in the vinegar-water mixture.

3. Baking soda-citric acid for the dishwasher
If unpleasant smells arise in the dishwasher, fungi or bacteria are usually to blame. To get rid of them, a trick from a mix of home remedies helps: citric acid and baking soda.
- First, put three tablespoons of citric acid into the powder compartment of the dishwasher and close the flap.
- Then sprinkle around four to five tablespoons of baking soda into the interior of the machine.
- Run a short rinsing process at a medium temperature and the machine will be hygienically clean again.
But don’t the effects of citric acid and baking soda cancel each other out? Basically that is correct. In this case, however, it supports the function of the dishwasher: the baking soda in the dishwasher cleans the interior before the powder compartment flap opens.
