The food prices have again made a clear jump up. According to a current communication of the Federal Statistical Office The prices in March rose by an average of three percent compared to the same month last year. However, a detailed analysis shows that the prices for some products are well above this average.
Harvest failures in Spain lead to price increase
The Agrarmarkt Information Society (AMI) reports that Paprika was 34.5 percent more expensive in March of this year than a year ago. This enormous increase in price is primarily due to the unfavorable weather conditions in Spain that have led to crop failures. In addition, the high humidity has affected the condition of the fruits. The wholesale prices for red peppers in Germany were over 3.50 euros per kilogram in early April and thus above the average of the past few years.

Rising prices for fruit and vegetables
This increase is not only affected. The prices for cucumbers and tomatoes have also increased significantly with 23.7 percent and 19.9 percent. Strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries are particularly affected by the fruit, which also became 23.7 percent more expensive. The AMI points out that the range of raspberries is scarce. The cool weather in the Mediterranean has delayed the ripeness of the berries and thus influenced the season.
Also a strong increase in butter
Price -conscious consumers also had to pay significantly more for butter, chocolate and fruit juices than in the previous year. Butter made 23.3 percent more expensive after prices reached a record high in autumn and dropped again in February. Orange and other fruit juices were more expensive by 18.7 percent. In contrast, sugar became significantly cheaper. According to the Federal Statistical Office, sugar was 26.1 percent cheaper in March, as did products, as well as onions, garlic and carrots, the prices of which have dropped by 12.7 percent or 10.8 percent.
Overall, the data show that life in Germany in March no longer increased as strongly as in the months before. Consumer prices were 2.2 percent above the level of the previous year’s month, which is a moderate inflation in the long -term comparison. The decisive factor for this was the increased food prices.
